The days are long but the years are short: in a blink of an eye, my lil baby (he crossly told us today that he's not a baby anymore) is now a young boy. "I'm almost a teenager now!" he pointed out. So this is an update on what my almost-teenager has been up to since he started Standard 1 this year in a big boy's school.

We've been doing creative writing at home this year. Although his spelling leaves very much to be desired, I found this to be a very cute piece. Told Bubs that this now constitutes a binding contract which I expect him to follow ;)

Bubs shows less interest in reading though he'll happily flip through books to look at pictures. His latest passion is now collecting Pokemon erasers and can spend ages flipping them over each other (must be a boy game). I've tried showing him how we used fingers to try to shoot the erasers off the edge of the table but he preferred flipping them.

He still loves his sweet treats.
And loves burning off energy by being unable to keep still for a few minutes at the most. I sometimes pity his classroom teacher that has to guide 30 plus boys every weekday.
He loves splashing around in the pool but still steadfastly refuses swimming lessons.
Hub's friend took us on an eating spree at Bukit Mertajam recently and we discovered a couple of gems that I'd love to share with you guys.

Yoong Kee Eating Shop is an old school, no frills eatery that serves simple, hearty Teochew dishes. It is a local crowd pleaser and has been in business for decades, as evident by the original 3-digit phone number displayed on its signboard. The place gets packed pretty early so it's best to go before peak time.

We left the ordering to Hub's friend, who quickly rattled out a string of its most popular dishes. The Teowchew style steamed white pompret was a must have with its tangy clear sauce. Hubs, who is a proud Teochew nang, loved all the dishes and kept wolfing down bowls of piping hot white rice.

I only had a small portion because I was saving my apetite for supper, which was ...

That's right, the famous duck egg char koay teow in BM. Hub's friend directed us to this stall, which is right next to the Fresh Food Court. It only starts at 8pm but opens well into the dark of night. During the day, it operates as a car wash but come night fall, it dishes out fragrant platefuls of charcoal stir fried noodles with creamy duck eggs. Even before the proprietor starts his business, a steady stream of customers lined up patiently awaiting his arrival.

Ok, time for a lil confession. I was taken aback at how young the char koay teow seller was. And he was unbearably friendly to all the customers! With a pleasant smile on his boyish face, he was chatting to nearly all of them. He took down special requests with a quick grin as he deftly hefted his wok over the blazing sparks of the burning charcoal stoked fire.

What was this madness? I was accustomed to grizzly old sellers with surly looks that snapped at you if you so much as to request a slight variation. Most of them had ready phrases like "if you can't wait, don't eat!" rolling off their tongues.

And so with bated breath, we drove back with the hot packets of char koay teow as our suppers. I requested for an extra duck egg fried sunny side up at the side even though I know my cholesterol levels will be protesting.

My goodness! It was one of the best char koay teow I'd ever had in my life. The special soy sauce that I saw him splash added oomph to the flavour. The duck egg stir fried into the noodles was deliciously silky-salty and even though Hubs initially complained that the extra egg on the side was overkill, he quietly sneaked a few extra bites from my portion when he thought I wasn't looking ;)The Nonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14235304541512726540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925649891836996736.post-12080913637897863172017-09-02T23:21:00.000+08:002017-09-02T23:21:11.937+08:00The Super Long Weekend

Apologies for the radio silence over the past couple of months as we were caught up in a mad tangle of work and school. The bright side of this week's super long weekend (Merdeka, Hari Raya Haji and the bonus extra day off on Monday) is that we get a chance to spend time with family, friends and just lazing about at home.

I was sooo excited that Marini was back in town because it's been ages since we last met! She was my roomie way back when we were in our teens and until today, I still remember how she took care of me when I was delirious with fever. We'd the luck to be in the same city again during uni, spending many a day at cafes, trawling through warehouse sales plus enjoying pub music.
This time around, she brought her sweet cousin as we chilled out at China House. The place was packed to the rafters with crowds of people but the cakes added with the gorgeous decor was well worth the wait.
After our desserts (Marini is in <3 with the Red Velvet), we popped over to Sixth Sense, a clothing boutique just next door which attracted us with its stunning plant displays. They had some really nice clothing with a cute range of homeware - think macrame plant holders, marble tile coasters and wooden bowls - that even Marini couldn't resist getting a cute white lace top.

I have been obsessed with plants lately! I keep a small indoor collection of air plants, orchids and a baby fiddle leaf fig. The giant air plant with wavy leaves is a xerographica and I am so in love with how it adds a touch of drama. I'm still trying to figure out its light and watering needs. I've killed the smaller xerographica by putting it too long next to a sunny window and then frantically trying to make up for it by over watering it.
My orchid finally bloomed, yay! This was such a huge achievement for me as it's been kept solely indoors and grown without a medium. I didn't even know what colour it was going to be as the nursery owner wasn't sure either.
I'd been eyeing this Uniqlo paperbag-styled skirt for months and when it finally went on sale, I snapped it up in an instant. It's midi length and a lovely shade of red, most importantly, it has pockets! Whenever I wear it, I feel like I've stepped out from the pages of the Handmaid's Tale.
Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a creepily delicious book that is perfect for late night reading. It starts out as a standard vengeful ghost story of a woman that was accused of witchcraft and executed. Her spirit now wanders through the streets of Black Spring. As you unravel through the intricate layers of the story, your perception over who is the true monster starts to shift. Not giving away any spoilers but the mob mentality in Hex reminded me of Marina Abramović's Rhythm 0 performance.
Bubs was thrilled to bits when I told him about the open air cinema at Butterworth which is screening Despicable Me during weekend nights. He insisted that we make a proper picnic of it, "lots of snacks, Mummy!" I was feeling nostalgic too. My Mum used to tell me of her movie nights when they were growing up in Kelantan. A projector and a screen would be set up in a field and everyone would turn up with mats to sit.

Bubs had so much fun with the "movie picnic"! He enjoyed sitting under the moonlight, the sights, the sounds and got so engrossed in the movie that he was pretty agitated at some points when kids were standing up in front of him. We simply moved the mat, fan and picnic basket around to a clearer spot.

At the end of the movie, we had a quick walk around the field where Minion mania was in full swing.
Victoria Green Corner is one of the most intriguing cafes that we've been to in a while. It serves hearty, Nonya-influenced dishes but in a retro chic ambience. It's located just opposite the field at Westlands High School (pretty close to the old CRC restaurant) and parking is relatively easy during non-schooling hours.

The assam laksa was the star dish with its thick soup generous with fish chunks and perfectly balanced with the right amount of piquant sweetness. What differs Victoria Green Corner's assam laksa from the rest is its use of sardines, instead of the more commonly used ikan kembung. An old friend's mum told me that sardines make the spicy broth taste sweeter. Even Hubs who usually can't stand the strong, fishy scent of sardines had to admit that this soup was superb.
D finds it amusing that I usually teach Bubs based on hands on activities. When he was a toddler, I introduced the alphabet by letting him trace letter shapes in coloured salt on a tray and forming them with play dough. We explored addition and subtraction by counting marbles. Science was in the form of freezing tiny toys in ice blocks and using them as bath toys to see what could melt ice the fastest.

She asked me to think of a fun concept to teach Malay.
Challenge accepted.
I present to you ... the penjodoh bilangan tray. Penjodoh bilangan is known as classifiers in English (I'd to Google that), eg: school of fishes, slice of bread, stick of butter. I wrote some commonly used penjodoh bilangan from his textbook, such as biji, batang, etc and gathered objects for him to match them to the correct classifier.
Bubs was excited because we usually use workbooks to practise Malay. He was hard at work grouping the items together.

The only tricky bit I had was including 1 of his milk tooth as an object (sebatang gigi if you wanted to know).

"Mummy, I thought the Tooth Fairy took my tooth away!"

I couldn't say no to a 20% off for my birthday month at Warehouse so I added a couple of tops that I hope I'll be able to get heaps of wears out of them.

Most of the shops are still stocking bardot and cold shoulder tops but I don't want to spend too much on what I think might be just a trend so I got this Warehouse piece which comes in a cute tropical print. I paired it with an old Forever 21 tube skirt that I found at the clearance rack which has a quirky asymmetrical waistband and hemline.

I'm a huge fan of florals so I couldn't resist this magnolia print sleeveless top. I think I also have a bit of an obession with black pencil skirts which I find so versatile.
This is an old Miss Selfridge crop top and has all of my favourite elements: baby blue, florals and a ribbon tie at the back.

Sis-in-law brought us to the Ais, a cafe serving artisan ice cream crafted from with uniquely local flavours at Chulia Street, as a Mothers Day treat and I think we've fallen in love with the place. The owners pride themselves on serving delicious, low sugar and all-natural frozen treats. So passionate are they about their offerings that they not only generously invite you to sample their wares but also patiently explain the ingredients behind it. Some options are sugar-free and there are even vegan options (dairy free). Also available on the menu are waffles and kefir.

There were interesting ice cream flavours such as butterfly pea, Horlicks Kit Kat and even Nutella Guinness (yes, they have a liquor-base range as well!). Each one of them tasted so good that it was hard to narrow down our choices.

Bub's choice was a no brainer: chocolate on a cone. This is one of the Ais's sugar-free choices and the intensity of the chocolate really shone through. I was more than impressed with both the flavour and texture; it's usually difficult to make ice cream without sugar as you'd usually end up with a grainier texture, but the Ais's version was good. The owners mentioned that they had many trial and errors in whipping up this for diabetic friends and it was such a hit that they decided to start marketing it.

Hubs and I shared a double scoop of Horlicks Kit Kat and charcoal cheese. The Horlicks Kit Kat was a crowd pleaser with everyone as it wasn't overly sweet. It had a pleasant, malty taste with bits of Kit Kat and a creamy texture. Charcoal cheese was definitely a unique pick: think of a milder, less salty version of Cheezels but in a vanilla base. I really liked it and it's a flavour that I'd return to.

The owners mentioned that during durian season, they add in seasonal flavours like durian and cempedak so I can't wait for them!
Bub's left me at a loss for words with this beautiful pink paper bloom that he made for me. Hubs shouted a dinner at S.Wine Queensbay where the food was great and service was top notch. This was the beer brined pork chop with bacon fried potato cubes.
I'm not sure of its correct name but both the nursery owner and my dad's friend calls this one as a rosita. It has sharp thorns when mature, something I'm not too keen on but it looks amazing when potted with a rock.
And though his spelling leaves much to be desired, Bubs has been on a scribbling craze, doodling on spare bits of paper with little stories and comic strips, which gives me the fuzzies more than any store bought card <3The Nonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14235304541512726540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925649891836996736.post-14287959492956325812017-04-10T09:40:00.001+08:002017-04-10T09:40:36.163+08:00Lunch Boxes 2

A few months down the road and I think I'm starting to get the hang of these lunch boxes. I learned that the trick is to always offer variety and make sure that nothing leaks, haha! Unfortunately, Bubs isn't the biggest fan of veggies so I've wisely omitted stuff like carrot sticks and the like from his lunch boxes. I console myself with the fact that he eats them, albeit unwillingly, during meal times at home.

Homemade pancakes with jam. In hindsight, I should have popped open the lid of the jam container before snapping a pic. At home, we usually have pancakes with honey but I've nightmares of Bubs making a sticky mess at school so I swapped them for jam instead.
Thai Shop, a small cafe at the corner of Kimberly Street, is chock-full of Instagram-friendly nooks and crannies. It offers authentic Thai cuisine with both indoor and outdoor seating. If the weather is good, grab a chance to sit outdoors to experience a full Thai street food experience. Ordering is slightly confusing; even if you're seated indoors, you still need to walk outside next to the little alley to place your order though don't let that deter you: the food here is amazing.

The cha yen (Thai iced milk tea) and tub tim krob (shaved ice dessert) were the first to arrive. We loved the creamy, not overly sweet milky iced tea that comes in a ready to takeaway cup but thought that the tub tim krob could be more generous with their slices of jackfruit.
The pork satay was an instant crowd pleaser; succulent and sweet - almost like char siew, Bubs could have easily finished the whole plate if we didn't stop him. In fact, when Hubs returned again with his colleagues, he said one guy ate 7 sticks at a go and even requested a takeaway. It was THAT good.

Hubs thought the signature stewed pork knuckle served with steaming white rice was tender and and reasonably priced. The pickles and chilli sauce went perfectly with the soft pieces of meat.
I liked the green papaya salad which was freshly made at the open air kitchen and it wasn't as crazily spicy as some versions I've had. It made for a light bite. I did think that they made a kickass fried egg for the rice that comes with the green curry. The green curry was decent though not the star of the meal.
We loved the food there so much that we went back for round 2 with my Dad. This time around, we decided to add on a couple more items. The pork sausages are a new addition to their menu and are a bit of an acquired taste. The owner told us in advance that it tastes a lil tangy. It wasn't that sour on the tastebuds but still pales in comparison to their stellar pork satay. Hubs was left to finish this since Bubs and I really loved the satay.

The seafood tomyum was a decent value, priced at RM12, it came with 3 large, fresh prawns. The fiery spice levels were more muted than I expected it to be and it wasn't overly sour either, though the flavours were bold and zingy.
Bubs is immensely proud of the fact that he can eat curry though he neglects to tell people that it's specifically Japanese curry that he can only eat (sweeter and milder than our local variants) and he'd been begging to try Kai Curry Bar for quite some time.

We dropped by for dinner last weekend but as it only opens at 6pm, we still had an hour to kill so Bubs was more than delighted to spend it at Creameal, just next door. It was thankfully quiet so we lounged there for a while.

Kai Curry Bar is a cosy restaurant that specialises in, yes, Japanese curry. They make their own spice blends and gravies without any artificial flavourings or MSG. Vegetarian options with veg-based curry bases are also available. The curry bar is named after the owner's son and Kai's drawings are used literally everywhere to add whimsy - from the walls, to the overhead panels and on the menu.

You're given the option of selecting either a pork or vegetarian based curry and we went with pork for all our dishes. Each dish comes with a complimentary scoop of chilled mashed potato salad plus a jar of , which we thought was a pleasant and welcoming touch. I personally loved the small jar of fukujinzuke, Japanese pickles, and took generous helpings of them.

Hubs choose the seared chicken curry, Bubs went with a small portion of the katsu curry. Hubs commented that the seared chicken was nicely done but conceded that the katsu was much better, it was coated with the right amount of breadcrumbs and fried to crispy perfection.

Kai's curry was wonderfully fragrant, a lot less sweet than the commercial ones at chain restaurants with a stronger spice taste. It wasn't tongue scorching but Bubs - who can't even stand black pepper - was gulping water every few mouths.

I picked the udon curry because I'm a huge fan of thick, chewy noodles and felt that the gravy was an amazing accompaniment to them. There were chunks of meat and vegetables in the soup and it was a hearty meal. It definitely had a nice, homecooked taste to it.
Ever since Bubs started primary school, weekdays have been a blurry rush of beating peak time traffic, unpacking and repacking his school bag, cramming in some revision all while trying to cook dinner and do the laundry at the same time. Whew! I get tired even thinking of it. Bub's weakest subject is Bahasa Melayu so I usually scan his school books to have an idea of what the teacher has covered, jot down a quick vocab list to practise with him and also get him to do a page or two from workbooks. Sometimes Bubs will read a Malay picture book with Hubs and again, I quiz him on vocabulary. #TigerMum, hear me roar.

So apart from school stuff, this is what we have been up to. I've said it again and again, Bubs is incredibly lucky to have grandparents that adore him and think that he can do no wrong. During the last school holidays, both sets of grandparents were squabbling over who got to look after him.
Meal planning has been such a time saver and sometimes on weekends, I pre-cook for the week ahead and store them in the freezer. This simple braised peanut dish is a favourite of mine as it makes for a tasty side dish to rice porridge. All you need, apart from the time required to slowly braising them, are peanuts (soaked for a few hours to soften them), star anise, cloves, cinnamon pieces, 5 spice powder, soy sauce, dash of oyster sauce and sugar to taste.
Taking some time out to <strike>smell the roses</strike> admire bonsais. My dad's friend has this amazing bonsai collection and each time I visit him, I am just in awe at how artistic he is in arranging the layout and the infinite care and patience he has in babying them. Look at how he packed soil and rocks on a very shallow tray and getting them to form a craggy mount for the bonsai to grow on.
Bubs has been trying his hand at short creative writing and at times, I don't know whether to laugh or cry at his attempts. In typical Bubs style, he rushes through his work to get it over with. For his imaginary pet monkey, he initially stopped after "it won't eat you", saw me arching an eyebrow at him and tapping at the paper, before wisely deciding to expand it just a bit more. Bubs, oh, Bubs ...

Art is one of his favourite classes so he was excited to do this cool fingerpainting art at home. We found it amusing that strong-willed Bubs was unusually insistent in following the art teacher's suggested composition, right down to the exact number of flowers ;)
We took a whirlwind trip to KL earlier, spending just a night there but spending it on a lot of truly yummy eats.

We arrived just a little past lunch time and spent it at Red Kettle, Taman Desa, mainly because I've been craving for its chocolicious soft serve and Hubs loves their innovative menus. The cafe was jam packed on a Saturday as it was peak time but the wait staff were very pleasant and quickly cleaned a table for us.

I'm not usually a fan of rice-based dishes but the fried chicken karaage and rice really hit all the right buttons. I usually find fried chicken and plain white rice to be a lil dry but the sauces and twist of lime added a nice zing to the dish. The green veg were steamed to perfection and still crunchy. Bubs absolutely loved the crispy chicken pieces.

Hubb's choice was the Vietnamese pork meatball sandwich which was a nice, crusty baguette stuffed with tender pork meatballs, a medley of sauces that had notes of lemongrass, pickled veg and a piquant chilli mayo. I stole a few bites of it and found it to be kickass.

"I want chocolate ice cream in a cone!" Bubs demanded even before we stepped into the cafe.

Voila, dessert was everyone's dream come true all on a single skillet.

Chocolate soft serve, in a cone, no less, check.
Grilled, homemade bacob (these people homemake everything!) check
Fluffy soft French toast, check.

Needless to say, the 3 of us polished this off easily. Bubs promptly plucked the cone and what remained of the ice cream up quickly before it could melt any further. Hubs complained mildly that the salty rashers of bacon was weird in a dessert but I relished it every bit of it (less men, more share), piling more chocolate ice cream on top of it before spearing it onto a soft cube of French toast. Mmmmm, perfection <3

We continued our culinary adventure during dinner time with KL Godma, who always knows the best eating spots. She was raving about how amazing the iced watercress drink was at Monkey Noodle Bar so we drove around Taman Paramount in the drizzling rain a few rounds just to find a parking lot.

When we finally found a lot and hustled over to get a table, we were informed that sadly, the cold watercress drink already ran out. You should have seen the look of disappointment on KL Godma's face ;) Thankfully, they still had hot versions of the drink and agreed that they wouldadd ice cubes to my mug but did warn that it might dilute the taste a little.

"So? What do you think of it?" KL Godma asked after I took a sip of my drink.

It tasted exactly like watercress soup but without the porky taste. I didn't know if I was gulping down soup or a drink!

This was KL Godma's stewed pork rice stewed with a side of preserved mustard greens and topped with a sunny side up egg.

Bubs and I shared the pork noodles which came in a larger than expected portion and generous helpings of pork slices.

We under-ordered on purpose because KL Godma promised us a truly delightful dessert place just next door.

Kakigori dishes out delightful bowls of shaved ice concoctions. While they are slightly on the pricey side (my parents would choke at the idea of RM15 high class ice kacang), it is a lovely place to chill and the desserts are HUGE.

Look at the size of this Uji Matcha, literally bigger than Bub's head. Be warned, the matcha is a premium grade from Japan, which gives it a slightly grassy, strong scent and only for green tea lovers. There are tiny chunks of red bean hidden inside and it comes topped with home made warabimochi and a small cup of kinako milk.

I thought KL Godma's choice of Guava was much better and I can see it being a hit on blistering hot days. The guava bits were blended into the ice itself, giving it an interesting, pulpy texture. What made it stellar was the the petite dish of assam powder mixed with salt that you're meant to dip your spoon into before taking a scoop of the shaved ice. The sour, salty kick mellowed with the sweetness of the guava ice was unbelievable!

Bubs really enjoyed his 24 hours in KL with all of the feasting and spending time with KL Godma. Here's to the next trip ;)The Nonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14235304541512726540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925649891836996736.post-89058341649342988872017-03-16T22:52:00.000+08:002017-03-16T22:52:53.888+08:003 Things

A handful of things that fill my heart with <3 and joy :)

I've always been a fan of Melissa jelly flats since I could wear them for 10hrs straight at Legoland without any blisters/chafing. The price point is a bit of a splurge but they have always been good to me so I ended up with a 3rd pair. Tee hee, I know, the Minnie Mouse ears are a bit too much - even Hubs and Bubs were asking how old did I think I was - but this icy blue pair were too adorable for me to say no to! They are insanely comfy with a bit of padding inside and the infused bubblegum scent reminds me of being in a Smiggle store.

Getting a bit hooked on bonsais now ever since I went to my dad's friend's home and got a crash course on how to plant a bonsai. Can you believe that these pots are from Daiso? I got the rocks from an aquarium supply shop.

Bubs has gone through a growth spurt and is getting to be lankier now. Can't believe that in a couple more years, he'll be taller than me! He's adjusting well to his first year in primary school and happy as a lark that he still has pockets of time to mess around, care-free.The Nonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14235304541512726540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925649891836996736.post-79621250388021250022017-03-14T13:05:00.002+08:002017-03-14T13:05:31.437+08:00Lunch boxes

Bubs started Standard 1 waaaaay back in January and we've been trying to cope with the massive change of schedule (earlier bedtime, earlier wake up time), given that he starts classes at 7.30am plus the whole of Penang seems to be on the roads at that time. He seems to like his school so far, making heaps of friends and adjusting to the routine.

I've taken to packing his lunch box the night before so it wouldn't be so much of a mad rush the next morning. Bubs also gets a RM1 daily allowance but I've managed to convince him that if he skips buying junk from the canteen, he can spend his allowance to his heart's content on weekends. Bubs is happy with his lunch boxes and is great at sharing them with his buddies during recess. I also try not to visibly flinch when he says his friends share their canteen loot like fries with him, haha!

Aussie Godma got us some great bento lunchboxes during her last trip back and those are great for packing quick snacks on the go. Bubs loves nothing more than chocolate so Nutella days are red letter days for him :D

I try to pack some kind of fruit for him daily so I've taken to buying tiny fruits that are easy to pop into lunch boxes. These minature paradise pears are perfect to nibble on and don't require any kind of prep.

I've also taken to filling the fridge with single serve snacks that are a tiny treat for him.The Nonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14235304541512726540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925649891836996736.post-57226174562632135012017-02-01T23:15:00.003+08:002017-02-01T23:15:54.208+08:00Gong Xi Fa Chai

It's been a whirlwind of activities leading up to Chinese New Year this time around and we didn't have a lot of time to do the usual decorations.

I went with a mini festive table utilising what I could scavenge around our home. Yay to Daiso for the cute chick pot to welcome in the year of the rooster.

And because I now have a slight obsession with bonsai, my dad's friend showed me his collection, some of which are more than 30 years old. The gnarled branches curled around rocks, the tiny, lush green leaves and the soft, springy bed of moss were all amazing. Even Hubs, whose eyes usually glaze over at the mention of plants, found them fascinating and trailed his finger along some of the stems.

I'm thankful that both my family and in laws are in Penang so reunion dinner each time is a breeze. Hubs, Bubs and I spent lunch at my parents' and dinner at his parents' place. Mum broke with tradition this time around and made chilli crabs, one of my favourite dishes.
Bubs very helpfully pointed out a day before that his feet grew too big to fit into all of his shoes. Thankfully he had some hand me downs still in great condition from his cousin so Bubs was more than happy with this bright orange pair of kicks.
It's been a couple of weeks of huge milestones for us lately.

Bubs FINALLY had a loose tooth after enviously watching his friends loosing their milk teeth. We waited for a a bit, encouraging him to shake it with his tongue but we could see the new tooth creeping up behind. Hubs was concerned about Bub's front teeth getting misaligned so I took him to the dentist who agreed that it's best to have it extracted.

The dentist was so patient and Bubs was enthralled with the screen overhead that was playing cartoons so much that he only realised what was going on when she asked him to close his eyes while she deftly pulled it out after an anaesthetic spray. He cried a little then perked up after she said that he could have icy desserts to make up for the pain.
Following the good doctor's advice :)

I can't believe that Bubs is now in primary school! He was teary-eyed during the first week and there was even a point where I think I saw Hub's eyes getting suspiciously wet too ;)
I've to admit, it's been quite a mad rush getting Bub's recess lunchbox prepared at 6am each weekday so I do it the night before. I find it challenging trying to add food that doesn't require heating up whilst trying to keep it balanced with a mix of protein, carbs and a serve of fruit, in addition to nagging him to please-for-the-love-of-God to remember to bring back his lunchbox. This is a variation of his lunchbox: yoghurt, muesli, blueberries, biscuits and a small chocolate button. I've also started adding cutesy lunch notes.
On the reading front, I got hooked onto Rick Riordan's books after borrowing a copy of the Kane Chronicles. Nothing says relaxation better than a good book (usually not a zombie fan but the Girl with all the Girls was one of those books that I couldn't put down), using Bub's artwork as a bookmark and a generous wedge of the above-mentioned fruit cake, which was truly delectable with generous fruit and nut chunks.
On Christmas morning, Bubs woke up in tears because Santa didn't leave him a thank you note for the cookies and milk he left out. I glared at Hubs, who had told me the night before that Bubs was too old to believe in Santa notes anymore. It took a lot of persuasion for Bubs to stay in the bedroom while I ran out at 7am to pen a thank you note in my best cursive and giftwrap something from Santa.

Bubs also loved the box of Christmas crackers or "merry poppers" from my cousin Jean. I couldn't stop laughing at the look of shock and immediate recoil on their faces when Bubs and Hubs pulled their first cracker together with a loud SNAP.

December has been a whirlwind of celebrations and emotions for us. I'm still in denial that next week, Bubs will officially be a primary school kid already! Where did that chubby newborn that refused to sleep through the night go to?

Bub's Xmas Festival at school was a bittersweet one. He was so proud and eager to show us his speech, songs and dances, but at the same time, it was the last day of school so he wasn't looking forward to that either.

As usual, the parents were greeted with colourful Santa origami and crayon-coloured paper stars that each child made.

Thankfully the weather was clear and we were able to have morning tea outside. The children baked the butter cookies themselves earlier and this was Hub's favourite. The parents chatted together about the activities, primary schools, worries and traded cherished stories about what the children did playing together.

We were so proud of Bubs :) He performed beautifully even though there were a couple of times where his shoulders tensed up and you could see a determinedly stoic look on his face when he held back tears. Little confession: I was nearly in tears myself at this point, haha! Each child brought back a stocking stuffed to the brim with artwork and a tiny origami ornament.

To celebrate this transition from small boy school to big boy school, we revisited one of our favourite cafes: the Alley. Bubs was flipping through the reading selection at the side.
The best cronuts and churros in town served with a generous scoop of home made ice cream and salted egg dip (RM18) which is slightly on the pricey side but soooo good and worth every single cent.
Glam Girl was generous in gifting Bubs a couple of tickets to the Gurney Paragon indoor playground. which he thoroughly enjoyed. The biggest hit was the ginormous slides that lead to a pit filled with gazillions of rainbow coloured balls. Bubs was so enthralled, he even dove straight into the balls and swam with them! The Nonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14235304541512726540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925649891836996736.post-744883748539480502016-12-21T17:28:00.000+08:002016-12-21T17:28:21.044+08:00Nutty for Granola

I used to eat the greasiest or sweetest things I could get my hands on for breakfast quite a while back. Think along the lines of nasi lemak drenched with squid sambal, curry flavoured instant noodles topped with a deep fried egg, sugary cereals with cold Milo ... mmm. Now that age (and an expanding waistline) is creeping up on me, breakfasts have simplified into sourdough, yoghurt and granola. I've developed a strong liking now for good granola topped with either a splash of milk or yoghurt.

Amzin' Graze has an incredibly yummy range of granola and can be purchased online. I like that they're a small, local startup and incorporate Asian twists into their granolas, such as green tea, gula Melaka. Shipping to Penang was fast with the items packaged securely to minimise damage.
This is my favourite: the gingerbread granola that came with puffed barley and such a strong Christmassy scent that it flavoured the plain yoghurt. Bubs loved finding random pieces of candied ginger hidden amongst the granola.
Popicles! This is the chocolate peanut butter one (RM6) made from almond milk and sprinkled with her signature crunchy granola. To be honest, I was hesitant about ordering this as I've a fear of sickly sweet almond scents like marzipan, but Shia's version was very light and fresh. I finished this down in no time.
The cafe is slightly on the tiny side and fits only a couple of tables but don't let that deter you from visiting this cosy nook. There are also a handful of Penang themed souvenirs and tidbits from artisan food makers in addition to their own granolas available for sale.
We'd been kept incredibly busy the past few weeks with work, kindy and getting prepared for the new year ahead. These are a handful of stuff that kept us relatively sane.

I've been consoling myself with these yummy bites that are so addictive, they carry a warning. The salted egg texture with bits of crispy curry leaves go perfectly with the potato/fish skin slices. These are crazily priced though (SGD16 per pack) and with the weak exchange rate at the moment, it's more of an indulgence than a routine stress reliever. The Nonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14235304541512726540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925649891836996736.post-85338904957419368142016-12-13T11:02:00.002+08:002016-12-13T11:02:39.200+08:00Little Journeyman Cafe

I was practically salivating after seeing all the gorgeous photos of melting raclette taken at The Little Journeyman Cafe, so one fine day, I persuaded Hubs to take us there for a pre-dinner snack. It was a little tricky to find but thank goodness for Waze.

It's tucked in a tiny lane, within the same meticulously restored heritage houses as the Musuem Hotel, offering simple but delicious quick eats such as pastas and small bites like toasts and fries.
The inside of the cafe is sleek, minimalist with only a few tables set up but thankfully, it offers air conditioning plus wifi. We were there pre-dinner so there wasn't too much of a crowd.
Bubs picked the matcha toast (RM5) and we added a scoop of alcohol-infused rum and raisin ice cream (RM5) on top of it. Hubs also had the salted caramel latte (RM13). Hubs peered doubtfully at the slab of bright green toast and helpfully pointed out that it looked like something out of Shrek.
The toast was an slice of white bread with a generous spread of matcha that Bubs thoroughly enjoyed. Hubs gave the excuse that alcohol spiked ice cream is bad for kids and quickly polished that off before Bubs could even have a try.
The star dish at the cafe was the raclette on crispy potatoes (RM25). There were also little chunks of bread, a handful of cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and some rocket tossed in balsamic. The highlight is the waiter slicing warm raclette cheese onto the dish in long, creamy tendrils. The 3 of us perked up at the sight of the golden mound and eagerly dug in. It did not disappoint us at all. The flavour of the cheese was rich and complemented the cubed spuds perfectly. The potatoes were a little soggy and not as crisp as I would have liked them to be though the cheese more than made up for it.
One of the nicest things of living in Penang is that you can never run short of cool backdrops ;) And yes, my Cambridge Satchel has been one of my best buys this year. It's so versatile with a top handle plus a long shoulder strap as a cross body option.

My cousin got me hooked onto scarves. Initially I was a little dubious but she convinced me to treat it as an alternative to a statement necklace. It took me ages to find a bright, silk one in Penang and I'm still learning how to knot it neatly.
This bright turquoise jersey wrap dress was a gift from Aussie Godma and I love how fast and easy it is to layer over a camisole.
