When you start seeing promotions for Bon Odori popping up at the mall.
Penang has a large Japanese community and Bon Odori is celebrated here annually at the Esplanade field every July. Traditionally celebrated in Japan during the summer, you get many Japanese wearing yakuta (light cotton kimonos) and Jusco has also cashed in on it by selling a variety every year before Bon Odori.
The last time Hubs and I went to Bon Odori was back in 2009. It was jam packed with Japanese and locals. There was a huge stage in the center where there were cultural performances, music and dances and visitors in the field were dancing along to the music too.
The dancers in yellow came all the way from Japan just to participate in the Bon Odori performance in Penang. They were extremely graceful. Don't you just love how pretty all the kimonos are?
Bon Odori always closes with a bang - literally. You get some of the best fireworks display and the crowds go oooh and ahhhh. We might go this year if Bubs isn't too cranky.
And speaking of Japanese summer treats, I spotted one of Japan's best loved mascots at Crabtree and Evelyn.
A range of Hello Kitty tea set from tea cups and saucers to a 2 tier cake stand is available as promotional gifts. Super duper cute!
